Jan 14 - Getting to Know You
I gave out a printable book from EnchantedLearning. The children took them home to finish and bring back the next week.
Song. The Hello Song. From Dragon Tales.
Jan 21 - Green Eggs and Ham
We read the book. We talked about rhyming words. We played a board game. I handed out a book of easy spelling based on Green Eggs and Ham.
Jan 28 - The Mitten
We learned about mittens, gloves, scarves and hats.
Song: The Three Little Kittens
Similes: as red as a cherry, as yellow as the sun.
I read the book "The Mitten".
Homework. Children were given mittens on which they were to create a design. Next week we will describe our mittens to the group and the other children will have to draw it. Then we will see how close they came.
Want more worksheets related to "The Mitten?" Enchanted Learning. (Although a different version than my story: different animals and a different ending!)
A lesson about the Very Hungry Catterpillar and food.
March 11
CATERPILLAR CHANT - - - - - - - - - What do caterpillars do? Nothing much but chew and chew. What do caterpillars know? Nothing much but how to grow. They just eat what by and by will make them be a butterfly, But that is more than I can do however much I chew and chew.
April 15
Today, in keeping with Yom HaShoah, and I wanted to do an appropriate theme without getting into "heavy" stuff, as I wasn't sure how much detail the children knew already.
I chose "The Sneetches" by Dr. Seuss. The Sneetches is a very obvious story about prejudice. You can see the full text here.(Ignore the stuff at the bottom.)
Instead of the idea of blue eyes, blond hair being "better" than brown eyes, dark hair, in The Sneetches, the ones with stars on their bellies were the snooty ones. Dr. Seuss, being Jewish, wrote this story because of antisemitism he experienced as a child
I followed this up with a worksheet. I also taught them the song: "Sing" and gave them the lyrics. If you don't know the tune, you can hear it here.
April 30
Today I read the delightful picture book "We're Going on a Bear Hunt."
In this book are lovely descriptive words while the children in the story go trecking through swishy grass, rivers, oozy mud, and more.
Here is someone's version of the text here.
We acted out the story using props to represent the different areas.
Here is a nice worksheet.
We also played My-Aunt-Went-to-America memory game where the kids had to first match letter cards with words that began with that letter.
I also taught them a Teddy Bear Rhyme and gave them a copy of it to color.
May 7
THE BILLY GOATS GRUFF
Today I read them the story of "The Billy Goats Gruff."
We did some worksheets and started to prepare scenery for next week, when we shall be dramatizing the story!
You can print out your own book if you wish here. It makes a delightful coloring book! (Print only up to p. 12.)
May 14
Today we used stick puppets in a puppet theatre to act out the story of the "Three Billy Goats Gruff."
May 21
Today it was only the girls, and I used this opportunity for some online fun.
The
Billy Goats Gruff online. (Click on "Billy Goats Gruff")
A lovely musical story, 1002 Arabian Nights. (Click on "full screen")
Another musical story,
The Sleeping Princess.
Replaying the stories will help reinforce the English.
We did a short practice of the play, and I emailed you scripts.
