Rehovot English Group #2

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS

Reviewing the lessons is IMPORTANT to reinforce vocabulary. Please spend time asking the children about the stories we read, the games we played and sing the songs with them.

While the assignments aren't "mandatory," they give a focal point to reviewing. Also, I believe that children who have to sit in class next week with nothing to share when others do,feel left out and embarrased. Please make sure that your children come to class with their assignments completed as much as THEY want, and ready for sharing.

Children who don't like to draw can use stickers, stamps, or find pictures from magazines or the internet. Anything goes!

Feb. 28 - If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Another charming story, by Laura Joffe Numeroff.
It's about cause and effect: if you eat your dinner, you can have dessert.
If you give a mouse a cookie....what happens?
We did a maze in the class.

Feb. 21 - What Do You Do With a Kangaroo?

A charming story by Meyer Mercer, with a lot of repetition and interesting rhymes.
What would YOU do if a mean grumpy kangaroo tried to take over YOUR bed?
Why you'd kick him out of course!

Book Cover

We learned the animals: kangaroo, opossum, racoon, llama, tiger, camel and moose.
For take-home they got a coloring page.

Feb.14 - Little Red Riding Hood

We all know the "classic" tale of Little Red Riding Hood. But this story is a new version. Granny isn't feeble, she rides a tractor. And the wolf is the one that exclaims "What big eyes you have." This is a hilarious version, and the kids loved it.

Discuss with your kids other fairy tales, and think of new endings.

Jan. 31 The Mitten

I told the children this classic tale, with activities to go along.

December 27 Spiders

I know an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly....fun with the song plus a fun take-home activity.

December 20 Dinosaurs - Part 2

Thanks to all the kids who brought and told about the wonderful dinosaur things. Everyone took part!
I read to them the story that Yuval brought: How Does a Dinosaur Get Well?
We did an action rhyme (scroll down almost to the bottom..Linda M.) and learned the name of four dinosaurs. Some other nice fingerplay rhymes.
Craft for "homework": Toilet Paper Roll Dinosaur. I glued it like this example (easier for kids).

December 13 Dinosaurs! - Part 1

What kid doesn't like dinosaurs? Today, after a short discussion of how many donuts we ate on hanukka, we started a lesson about dinosaurs!
We read the book: How Do Dinosaurs Play?
We learned about HERBIVORES and CARNIVORES, with some worksheets.
These worksheets, and others, are available in the "Learning Page Site." Worth signing up!
We did Kindergarten Science Sheets 9, 15, and Language sheets 1 and 2.
Chant: Five Enormous Dinosaurs (Scroll down!)
For next week, I asked the children to each bring SOMETHING to do with dinosaurs for next lesson: a book, a toy, to find some interesting fact and/or picture and be ready to share it with the class.

November 29 Chanukka Activities

Some songs, games and activities with a chanukka theme.

November 22 Emotions with Pumpkins

Five Little Pumpkins book to print.

November 15 Rainbow Magic - Part 1

We finished reading the story.

November 8Rainbow Magic - Part 1

A lovely book the Ayala bought about a little girl and her dog who goes beyond the rainbow and turns into a little fairy.
Activity: Rainbow mobile

November 1 - It's Autumn

We named the four seasons, and talked about what happens in autumn: the days grow shorter, it gets colder and the rain starts to fall.
We learned that some animals "hibernate" -- go to sleep -- for the winter, and read a sweet story: Wake Me in the Spring.
Handouts are from here and here. (Email me if you would like me to send you the pdf file.)
we sang the action song: Bluebird, Bluebird, Through my Window.

October 25 - The Button Box

We read Ayalah's book, The Button Box, and had fun sampling Linda's button box. We learned how we can sort things using different criteria: size, color, shape, and type, among others.
The children got their own "Button Box Book" to prepare and color.
We sang the song: Getting to Know You (from the King and I).

October 18 - A is for Ants

Ants in My Pants

After sharing the booklets the children prepared over the week, we read the book: Ants in My Pants, by Wendy Mould

We sang the song: The Ants Go Marching One by One. Hear the music See the complete lyrics.

They received takehome pages to color and match rhyming words.

October 11 - Welcome!

This was a getting-to-know-you lesson, parents and children together.
I gave out a small booklet for the children to tell about themselves.
You can find the pages here -- pages 2, and 5-9. Note, you will only be able to see thumbnails, as you must be a member to get the file, so email me if you want me to send you the pages. (OR...join! Membership isn't expensive, and if you explore the site, you will see there is tons of stuff for you to print for your child!)
The cover is here.
The children took them home to finish and bring back the next week.

I read a short, cute story about some kittens, and then we played a "TOY" memory game.
"THE GOODBYE SONG"

See you next lesson!
