End-of-Year Party

The end of year party had a "packed house" with dads and siblings along too. SRO - actually, they were seated on the floor too!

We didn't spend a lot of time on rehearsals, so there were a few glitches, but all in all, the kids did a wonderful job and the skits were a success! You can see the script here

After the skits, the children received certificates and small gifts. A dinner party followed.

As soon as I get pictures, I will post them for all to see. Hope everyone enjoyed the party and had a great year! Thanks, everyone, for the lovely gift!

Silly Stories

After talking about the differences in the workpage from last week,
We read some silly stories: "There's a Carrot in my Ear," and "Amelia Bedelia", and thought about the end of year and putting on a play!
Game: Bathroom Dominoes: keywords (review these with them!!) toilet, sink, bathtub, toothbrush, toilet paper, sponge, soap.

May 20 - More Monkey Stories

I wanted to read the book "The Gruffalo, but they all knew it already, so I read "Five Little Monkeys sitting in a Tree."
Game: Room/furniture lotto.
Handout: What's different?

Handouts: What's different worksheet

May 6 - Yom Haatzmaut

Pictures included: The Kotel, Jerusalem, the flag, Ben-Gurion, olives, and more.
The kids new them all (almost!!!)
Discussion: What do you do on Yom Haatzmaut?
Craft: Yom Haatzmaut pinwheel.

April 29 - Alligators

A hilarious story about a dear pet alligator that accidentally gets flushed down the toilet, and how his love of music helps him find his way home.

Story: "When is Saturday?" (Sesame Street)
Worksheets on Days of the Week

Mar 18 - Pre-Purim

I read a "dress-up story" called "Who is in the Closet?"

March 11 - The OTHER side to the 3 little pig story!

Sometimes you have to hear both sides of a story....! Here is the story of the three little pigs from the Wolf's side!

March 4 - Clocks and Mice

I lesson about telling time...because you can always use more practice.
The children constructed clocks and a little mouse to run around it.

Hickory dickory dock
The mouse ran up the clock
The clock struck one
The mouse ran down,
Hickory dickory doc.
...
The clock struck two, the mouse went "boo"
The clock struck three, the mouse went "whee"
etc.!

Feb. 26 - If You Give a Mouse a Cookie

Another charming story, by Laura Joffe Numeroff.
It's about cause and effect: if you eat your dinner, you can have dessert.
If you give a mouse a cookie....what happens?
We did a maze in the class.

Feb. 19 - What Do You Do With a Kangaroo?

A charming story by Meyer Mercer, with a lot of repetition and interesting rhymes.
What would YOU do if a mean grumpy kangaroo tried to take over YOUR bed?
Why you'd kick him out of course!

Book Cover

We learned the animals: kangaroo, opossum, racoon, llama, tiger, camel and moose.
For homework, the kids had to match the animal picture with its name, and then put the names in ABC order

Feb.12 - Little Red Riding Hood

We all know the "classic" tale of Little Red Riding Hood. But this story is a new version. Granny isn't feeble, she rides a tractor. And the wolf is the one that exclaims "What big eyes you have." This is a hilarious version, and the kids loved it.

Discuss with your kids other fairy tales, and think of new endings.

February 5, 2008 - All About Trees

Key words: Trunk, branch, twig, crown, bark.

Song: And the Green Grass Grew All Around All Around (my variation)

January 1, 2008 - Safety Around Dogs

Most children loved dogs and puppies, but how many of us, parents included!, know the proper way to approach a dog?
Dogs have their own way of thinking, and their own way of showing their feelings, and it is up to us, the humans, to know how to "read" a dog. Even the friendliest and gentlest dog CAN bite if it is stressed, anxious, in pain, or feeling threatened.
What is the proper way to approach a dog?
What should you do if a strange dog comes running towards you?
These are all safety issues which are VERY important to teach our children.
I hope our little lesson taught the children some lessons for life. Click here for details of the lessons and links for you.

December 25 - Dinosaurs 2

Dinosaur pop-up

Today the kids brought in some of their dinosaur stuff. Practicallly everyone had a model or two, and there were some books. Omer brought in the most AMAZING book of pop-up dinosaurs. Check it out here, with some photos of some of the pages.WOW!!

"Homework" is to make a dinosaur out of a toilet-paper roll. See here for instructions and template (if you need another one). There are two ways to make it: more lifelike, as in the picture on the right, or like here. If you want more t-p roll dinosaurs, or others, check here.

Dinosaur craft
From www.readinga-z.com

We also learned more about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores (see previous lesson for sources), and I read the book "How Do You Say Pterodactyl." (I will send as attachment in an email...anyone who wants a copy, please email me.)

Five enormous dinosaurs letting out a roar,
One went away and then there were four.
Four enormous dinosaurs munching on a tree,
One went away and then there were three.
Three enormous dinosaurs with nothing much to do,
One went away and then there were two.
Two enormous dinosaurs having lots of fun.
One went away and then there was one.
One enormous dinosaur trying to be a hero.
She went away, and then there were ZERO!

December 18 - Dinosaurs 1

Dinosaurs

What kid doesn't like dinosaurs? Today, after a short discussion of how many donuts we ate, and what kind of presents we got for hanukka, we started a lesson about dinosaurs.

We read the book: How Do Dinosaurs Play? (Thanks Omer!!) Then we learned about HERBIVORES and CARNIVORES,
with some worksheets.
These worksheets, and others, are available in the "Learning Page Site." Worth signing up!
We did Kindergarten Science Sheets 9, 15, 19 and 20.

Book

For next week, I asked the children to each bring SOMETHING to do with dinosaurs for next lesson: a book, a toy, to find some interesting fact and/or picture and be ready to share it with the class.

September 11 - Welcome!

I gave out a some printable for the children to draw their families and friends.
The children took them home to finish and bring back the next week.

I read a story about friendship during the high-holiday period, and why it is important to speak to others about things that bother us.
