Jan 14 - Getting to Know You

I gave out a printable book from EnchantedLearning. The children took them home to finish and bring back the next week.

Song. The Hello Song. From Dragon Tales.

Jan 21 - Green Eggs and Ham

We read the book. We talked about rhyming words. We played a board game. I handed out a book of easy spelling based on Green Eggs and Ham.

Jan 28 - The Mitten

We learned about mittens, gloves, scarves and hats.
Song: The Three Little Kittens
Similes: as red as a cherry, as yellow as the sun.
I read the book "The Mitten".
Homework. Children were given mittens on which they were to create a design. Next week we will describe our mittens to the group and the other children will have to draw it. Then we will see how close they came.
Want more worksheets related to "The Mitten?" Enchanted Learning. (Although a different version than my story: different animals and a different ending!)

CATERPILLAR CHANT
- - - - - - - - -
What do caterpillars do?
Nothing much but chew and chew.
What do caterpillars know?
Nothing much but how to grow.
They just eat what by and by
will make them be a butterfly,
But that is more than I can do
however much I chew and chew.

April 15

Today was Yom HaShoah, and I wanted to do a lesson that had something to do with the Shoah, yet without getting into "heavy" stuff, as I wasn't sure how much detail the children knew already.
I read "The Sneetches" by Dr. Seuss. The Sneetches is a very obvious story about prejudice.See full text here.(Ignore the stuff at the bottom.)
Instead of the idea of blue eyes, blond hair being "better" than brown eyes, dark hair, in The Sneetches, the ones with stars on their bellies were the snooty ones. Dr. Seuss, being Jewish, wrote this story because of antisemitism he experienced as a child
I followed this up with a worksheet. PLEASE make sure that it is completed, as there is a SECRET message, which I will continue with next week! I also taught them the song: "Sing" and gave them the lyrics. If you don't know the tune, you can hear it here.

April 22

Today's topic was "unique." Everyone has something unique about them.

I read them the Dr. Seuss story, " What was I Scared of," another one of his stories that teach children a moral.
See the text here .
Then we each made a "mixed up friend" - everyone drew one section of head, one of torso, and one of legs, and then we mixed up all the sections, and glued them into 6 "unique" friends.

April 29

Today I brought in the delightful picture book "We're Going on a Bear Hunt."
In this book are lovely descriptive words while the children in the story go trecking through swishy grass, rivers, oozy mud, and more.
Here is someone's version of the text
here.
Also, because it was Maayan's last day, we played a My-Aunt-Went-to-America-type memory game where the kids had to first match letter cards with words that began with that letter.
I also taught them a Teddy Bear Rhyme and gave them a worksheet. There is a nicer worksheet here..

THE SENSES

We talked about the five senses...and used them to sense our hand, sense the room (those baking cookies were great for "smell"), etc. We experienced a "touch-and-feel" book, heard sound effects, and smelled and tasted different substances.
We reviewed the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" (the kids wanted to hear it again - and they know it almost off by heart now!) and talked about what senses one feels when going through each of the environments!

I taught them my own version of the Teddy Bear Rhyme which they say they like better than the original!

To take home, they received a senses booklet. They are to paste or draw pictures of things that are appropriate for each sense.

   MY TEDDY BEAR RHYME

Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Turn around.
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Touch the ground.
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Reach up high.
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Wink an eye.
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Jump and play,
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Swim away.
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Slap your knees.
Teddy bear, teddy bear,
	Sit down please.

TURTLES

I took the great opportunity of a found turtle and did a lovely little lesson on turtles.
First they had to guess what was in the box, using ONLY yes/no questions in ENGLISH!!!
Back to Dr. Seuss, again... with "Yertle the Turtle."
Text here.
Also, a cute little turtle song

Here is a link to another cute song. Although I didn't have time to teach it, perhaps the kids can think of a good TUNE to go with the lyrics and perform it for us next week (with mom, if she/he is too shy to do it alone!)

May 20

THE BILLY GOATS GRUFF

We shall be putting on a little performance with stick puppets to the story of the Billy Goats Gruff.
You can print out your own copy of the book I read from
here.
Click "print story" --> "print all pages" but you only have to print pp. 1-12.

We also talked about the seasons, especially "Spring," played a Seasons lotto game, and learned a silly song: "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" (I only taught the first stanza.)

The Monster at the End of this Book

A wonderful book, with lots of expression!

See you next lesson!
